Ask five companies to quote for "a website" and you may get five very different numbers. That is not always because someone is overcharging. Usually they are quoting for different things. Understanding what drives the price helps you compare fairly.
1. Scope: what exactly is being built
The biggest factor is the amount of work: the number of pages or screens, features, user types and integrations. A clear written scope is the only way to compare quotes like for like.
2. Custom design or a template
A template is faster and cheaper. A custom design is built around your brand and your customers, and usually performs better. Both are valid choices, but they should not be priced as if they were the same.
3. Content and copywriting
Who writes the text, provides the photos and prepares product data? If the software house does it, that time is part of the price.
4. Integrations
Payment gateways, courier services, SMS, WhatsApp, ERP or accounting software each need setup and testing. Ask which integrations are included.
5. Quality and testing
Speed optimisation, security hardening, SEO setup and testing on real devices take time. Very low quotes often leave these out, and the cost shows up later.
6. Support after launch
Hosting, backups, updates and fixes are ongoing costs. Check whether a warranty period is included and what monthly maintenance costs.
How to get a price you can trust
- Write down your goals, must-have features and deadline.
- Share the same brief with each company.
- Ask for a written scope with a fixed price, timeline and payment schedule.
- Compare what is included, not only the final number.
